Commitment to Eradicate Child Labor in Citriculture

On May 28, 1996, Abecitrus signed a public commitment for the eradication of child work in the whole productive chain of frozen concentrated orange juice, and the declaration was officially recognized and praised by the Governments of Brazil and of the State of São Paulo, and by international organizations such UNICEF (United Nations Fund for Children Rights) and ILO (International Labor Organization).

The industrial sector doesn't employ, nor has ever employed any children in any phase of its activities. But, it recognizes that the problem comprising the use of children as manpower does exist, in the farms as well as in the cities. In the agricultural field, 92% of all farms are very small, and some of them, by tradition or for economic reasons, may use as manpower children and adolescents who belong to the family itself.

Abecitrus' proposal is to put an end to this kind of practice although, in the family environment, it does not necessarily interfere with the process of formation and education of the children.

Joining in an effort for the social awareness about the problem, which is led by the Abrinq Foundation for the Rights of Children, the companies associated with Abecitrus, which represent a sector of undeniable importance in Brazilian exports, have decided to take action and do whatever they can to effectively improve the quality of life of all children in school age.

  The Public Commitment
ABECITRUS, The Brazilian Association for Citrus Exporters, an entity wich congregates processors of frozen concentrate orange juice in the State of São Paulo, considering the purpose of collaborating with the Government of the State of São Paulo and with Abrinq Foundation for Children's Rights, in its campaign for the erradication of children's work in farming activities, as well as to foster school attendance of these children and adolescents under 14 years of age, takes upon itself the engagement:

2 - To foster actions which benefit the attendance of children at school.
3 - To collaborate in the development of actions which promote the professional qualification of adolescents aiming at their integration in the formal labor market.
4 - To recommend to its members to direct the donations foreseen in the Statute of Children and Adolescents and in the Income Tax Legislation, so as to help in the attainment of the objectives of the present engagement.
5 - To support the initiatives of the State Government, Municipalities and non-governmental organizations for joint participation in the actions foreseen in this engagement.
